CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES

  1. Define “spirit” as it relates to self and to healthcare service. Discover how empathy affects leadership and list four ways empathy affects leadership. See through the eyes of the patient and understand how that perspective can affect self-care as it impacts our sense of purpose, health and well-being. Considering the patient’s perspective, analyze how one’s perspective can affect self-care as it impacts our sense of purpose, health and well-being.

  2. List the standard surgical approach to head and neck cancers. Discuss the role of post-operative chemotherapy and radiation therapy in head and neck cancer. Discuss the changing demographics of oropharynx cancer, and the impact of HPV on overall survival.

  3. Discuss new chemotherapy and biotherapy agents available for treatment of cancer. Discuss the role nurses have in administering chemo and biotherapy agents. Create a plan to educate patients about the side effects of chemotherapy and biotherapy agents.

  4. Define metastasis and discuss the impact of metastatic disease on organ function. Discuss the impact bone metastasis has on quality of life.

  5. List the elements of USP General Chapter <800> that provides standards for safe handling of hazardous drugs to minimize the risk of exposure to healthcare personnel, patients and the environment. Discuss how safe handling practices for hazardous drugs requires multidisciplinary collaboration.

  6. Describe how evidence-based practice translates into safer bedside care and more desirable clinical outcomes.

  7. Discuss the advances in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal cancers. Discuss four trends in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers. Discuss the nurse’s role in assessing patients undergoing the most recent trends in gastrointestinal cancers.
